Sketch dump

These are all sketches from a couple sketchbooks from over a year ago. I haven't had much free time to go out and sketch in the past year. I've been working on some exciting new projects that I hope I can share here soon.

Apologies for the poor quality images. My scanner is down so I just snapped these with my phone straight from the book.

MVA Poster

A while ago I did a quick poster design for the premiere episode of MVA. I've done a few different designs for that kind of thing, but I turn them in and never see or hear of it again. Last night I randomly found this on the internet. Obviously my concept drawing is on the left, and the real poster on the right.
The drawing is a little shaky here and there, but it's the concept and composition that was really important. At least that's what I'll tell myself so I can sleep at night.

'Monsters vs Aliens' drawings

Here are some quick sketches of the monsters from Monsters vs Aliens. I've been doing storyboards for the show for a little over a year now. It's been a lot of fun and I've learned a lot.

I did these Susan sketches about a year ago when I started on the show.  Cartoony blobs with one eye are easy to draw, girls are not. Practice helps.

There is a sneak preview of the show March 23 at 9pm after the kids choice awards. The show officially premieres on Sat April 6th at 11:30am. Go check it out!

Jedi Training

I did this piece for Very Underground during Star Wars week.

Saw Moonrise Kingdom last night. Love them or hate them Wes Anderson movies always have a great sense of design and a unique voice. Every character in the movie looked like they were designed as if they were going to be in an animated movie. I could have sat around all day drawing everything in that movie, but I kept to the main characters.

Here's the trailer

Happy Camper

Im taking a class called Story Development for animation at the concept design academy in Pasadena with Rad Sechrist. He had a model come in for one of the classes. The model was pretty amazing. He looked like a human cartoon. These drawings aren't even pushed that much from real life.
We had to draw his pose and then add a story element. He made it pretty easy with his fake bird and his explorer outfit.

This background was kind of a cheat, but I couldn't think of anything to put behind this great pose.

The Boxer

I went to life drawing for the first time at the Nickelodeon studios today. The model was in character as a boxer. The model was pretty good and seemed to give this boxer an entire story arc.
